RECONSIDERING ARCHITOURISM is a response to the cessation of global travel + tourism in 2020. It contemplates the pursuit of cultural tourism focussed on architecture or “architourism”. This modern version of a series of grand tours as a lens to engage with + comprehend world culture reflects complex facets of artistic, social + political histories. Issues referenced include: the flux of architectural styles, the formalization of heritage tourism through the UNESCO World Heritage designation program, the survival of vernacular architecture, challenges of preservation + environmental conditions. Sites of extraordinary architecture in India + Sri Lanka experienced in 2019 comprise the subjects + images of this last trip. Currently, as the world begins to open up to global tourism + the prospects of economic benefits, the outlook for India, Sri Lanka + other countries remains fraught. The video was screened in 2021 at the Lund Architecture Film Festival in Sweden, the Better Cities Film Festival in Detroit, Michigan + in 2022 at the Cinema Urbana Brasilia Architecture Film Festival @ the Cinema Urbana by Oscar Niemeyer.
